Natech Accidents Triggered by Heat Waves

چکیده
Natech accidents have an increasing relevance due to the growing number of such events and their severe consequences. Climate change global warming are intensifying occurrence magnitude climate-related natural events, further risk cascading sequences triggered by disasters impacting industrial installations. The present study focuses on heat waves. features this specific category were investigated past accident analysis, collecting extended dataset events. analysis allowed identification key factors that characterize these scenarios, as direct causes, technological scenario occurred, substance categories, equipment items more frequently involved. main cause resulted in internal pressure increase, exceeding design limits. Fire scenarios represent most important occurred. Besides handling liquid gaseous hydrocarbons, waste storage processing systems also accidents, self-decomposition self-ignition phenomena. identifying some lessons learned, useful identify actions aimed at preventing and/or mitigating possible scenarios.

Industrial accidents triggered by natural hazards: an emerging risk issue
The threat of natural hazards impacting chemical facilities and infrastructures with the subsequent release of hazardous substances has been recognised as an emerging risk which is likely to be exacerbated by the ongoing climate change. Within the European FP7 project iNTeg-Risk, efforts are dedicated to address the problem of Natech accidents by trying to understand their underlying causes and...
متن کاملThe Impact of Heat Waves on Occurrence and Severity of Construction Accidents
The impact of heat stress on human health has been extensively studied. Similarly, researchers have investigated the impact of heat stress on workers' health and safety. However, very little work has been done on the impact of heat stress on occupational accidents and their severity, particularly in South Australian construction. Construction workers are at high risk of injury due to heat stres...
متن کاملTowards the inclusion of external factors in quantitative risk assessment: the analysis of NaTech accident scenarios
Threats deriving from external hazard factors as natural events and intentional acts of interference are perceived as important issues affecting the safety of chemical and process plants where relevant quantities of hazardous substances are present. The increasing frequency of some natural events having a particularly high severity also raised a growing concern for industrial asset integrity an...
متن کاملIntracellular Ca2+ waves, afterdepolarizations, and triggered arrhythmias.
Clinical studies have shown that sudden death is initiated by an illtimed propagated ectopic beat that leads to fibrillation. –4 However, the mechanism underlying these focal excitations is not completely understood. Experimental studies have demonstrated that abnormal calcium (Ca2+) cycling is a critical factor in the development of focal excitations. 9 These excitations can be caused by spont...
متن کاملHeat Waves and Hot Environments
Hot weather is an important determinant of human mortality. In the United States, a major heat wave can cause literally thousands of excess deaths in a given summer. Yet, for purposes of public health, the term "heat wave" is not easily defined. "Hot" is a relative term, and periods of hot weather (heat waves) vary greatly in intensity and duration. Ambient temperatures may change rapidly, and ...
